BBC 100 Women 2020: Sapana Roka Magar

Like every year, BBC announced 100 influential women for 2020 from around the world on 23 November. It's indeed astonishing and a matter of great pride to all the Nepalese to find Nepali girl, Sapana Roka Magar on the list. The list includes women from diverse professions. It is a commemoration of women who inspires and influence other women around the world. This year a woman who is leading to change and making a difference during these turbulent times is declared inspiring and influencing.

Who is Sapana Roka Magar?

She is 18 years old girl from Mangala, Myagdi. Currently, working at Pashupati as a crematorium technician. She doesn't do it as a social service but for her own peace of mind. She thinks homeless and abandoned people across the world deserve a proper ritual of cremation. Despite women are forbidden from doing the final ritual by the Nepalese culture, she has been doing it for quite some time. She has so far cremated 272 unclaimed bodies.

How she made to the list of 100 BBC 100 Women 2020:

BBC writes: After becoming homeless for three months, Sapana traveled to Kathmandu where she became involved in an organization that cremates unclaimed bodies.

The bodies of those who have died from Covid-19 are strictly managed by the Nepalese army. Sapana’s organization retrieves the abandoned bodies from the street or mortuaries and arranges for them to be taken to the hospital for post-mortem examinations. If the body remains unclaimed for 35 days, the organization brings it to the crematorium and performs the Dagbatti rituals, which in Hindi culture are usually performed by the son of the deceased.
