Giving Peace A Chance

Prioritizing Peace

Peace is not only perspective and preference. It should be mandatory for everyone and every nation. How peace can be achieved? A question easily said than done. That is why dwelling upon this must lead us somewhere. Without peace, our planet turns into an unlivable place. In the present context, it is really necessary for every one of us to understand the value of peace and ways to accomplish it. The progress of peace has been hindered by various means, especially ideologies that should be understood in order to solve the issue that challenges peace.

The concept of peace is as old as humanity and the concept of war. The scholars like Richmond, Harrison, and Richmond opine that despite the fact that history has mostly been peaceful there are a lot of pictures that show violence, damage, and death. Peace is possible in the absence of war and conflict. But how can conflict and war not be possible in the presence of various ideologies?

The French philosopher Destut De Tracy, is credited with coining the term ideology in 1796. The meaning he attributed to the term was entirely different from what it means in modern usage. From this vantage point, he began teaching a new field of knowledge or science called idea-logic. Today, ideology is a more or less coherent set of beliefs that serve as the foundation for organized political acts, whether they are intended to maintain or alter the current system of power relations. The systems of conviction, for instance: capitalism, communism, Marxism, patriotism, feminism, existentialism, humanism, astronomy, and this list goes on and on. Any sort of idea that provokes thoughts becomes ideology eventually. It is due to ideology; we tend to attract and repel people. Thus, not all ideologies are constructive. Some ideologies divide people and sometimes result in war and conflict. Hannah Ardent (Philosopher) views ideology as a power that can affect and potential to change the world. So here comes a question: Can peace prevail when the world is filled with different ideologies, mostly when one ideology is a result of one thesis and works mostly as an anti-thesis. The path to peace is interrupted by various sets of ideologies catered by those who are in power. However, a senior researcher from Dhaka University, Kazi Sameeo Sheesh admits peace is power, not vice versa. Likewise, peace should only counter war.

Mohammad Akmal Shareef (Researcher and writer) strongly believes that peace cannot be achieved in isolation. He accepts that there is always a battle between beliefs and facts. However, the beauty of diverse phenomena along with the collective acceptance of humanitarian agendas should be echoed to maintain peace. Peace is not a goal to be achieved rather peace is always in process for some scholars.  In regard to achieving peace, Professor Anisuzzaman opines even though it seems peace is unachievable at the moment, we should not give up on trying to achieve it. Furthermore, Peace is a prime instrument for sustainable development and since the world is trying to practice sustainable development, someday peace can be achieved.

In addition to that, in order to achieve peace Radia Tamim from Bangladesh thinks that prenatal education is essential for prevailing peace. The concept of harmony and tranquility is genetically transmitted. Everyone is conceived fetus in the womb of a woman. Moreover, if births are improved then gradually humanity will be improved.

Sheesh opines education can solve all the problems like conflict. He primarily thinks peace education has a conceptual potential to end the war even though there is no empirical evidence. So, he suggests us to be hopeful about education. Education is means to end problems like conflict and war.

A General Secretary of the Institute of International Peace and Conflict, Mohammad Abdus Sabur thinks peace can be built with the help of youth. In order to find the solution among different ideologies there are grounds such as international organizations viz. SAARC and ASEAN, through these organizations it is easy to facilitate and energize youth to add value in the field of peace. However, he laments over the fact that these organizations have been less effective over a period of time. Moreover, rather than dwelling on the causes of conflict and war, finding a resolution for collective peace is much more essential.

In conclusion, peace should not be neglected since it is an essential phenomenon for creating a livable place for each and everyone regardless of their belief system. Peace is the mutually exclusive phenomenon of war and conflict. This is a known equation. However, deploring a great concern over humanity, peace should not be avoided. Peace should be a priority and no stone left unturned to preserve peace, though right now instantaneous peace seems impossible. According to popular belief, known as the Law of Attraction, our subconscious will motivate our conscious mind to attain our goals more as we use our imagination to concentrate on them. Hence, I think if all of us can concentrate on peace then we might be able to push tendencies that may cause conflict.
