Role-Play Exercise: Resolving Conflict in Negotiation for Soft Skill Score

Objective:

Practice using conflict resolution strategies to reach a mutually acceptable agreement while managing disagreement.

Scenario:

Two parties must negotiate terms for a team project deadline and resource allocation with the instructor:

Roles: Intructor and Role A, B, C

Make a group of students who want to achieve 60%, 70% and above 80%

Role A: 60% Which are the tasks they want to do? By when they want to achieve? Who can help them to achieve? What will they do to optimum result? How do they do it?

Role B: 70% Which are the tasks they want to do? By when they want to achieve? Who can help them to achieve? What will they do to optimum result? How do they do it?

Role C: 80% Above- Which are the tasks they want to do? By when they want to achieve? Who can help them to achieve? What will they do to optimum result? How do they do it?

 


 


Instructions:

Begin negotiation.
Use these conflict resolution techniques:

Active listening

Separating people from problem

Finding common interests

Brainstorming options

Using objective criteria

Managing emotions

After 15 minutes, debrief discussing:

What worked well?

What was challenging?

How were conflicts resolved?

What techniques were most useful?

Tips for Participants:

Identify shared interests (e.g., project success, quality).

Use objective criteria (past project timelines, quality standards).

Manage emotions if frustration arises.

Explore creative solutions (adjusted timeline, phased delivery, redistributing workload).


Possible Outcomes:

Agree on ……. days timeline with milestones.

Agree on overtime or prioritizing critical features.

Agree on communication
