Mrs. Baroda was unhappy with information about Gouvernail's visit to their farm because she was tired of hosting. She was looking forward to a period of unbroken rest, and undisturbed tete-a-tete with her husband, when he informed her that Gouvernail was coming up to stay a week or two.

She had never met Gouvernail, despite the fact that she was aware that Gouvnernail and her husband were friends in college and that he had been a successful journalist.
